Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme that was started by @Lauren’s Page Turners. I’ve come across this meme through Emer at A Little Haze Book Blog. Emer has an interesting book blog and is one of my favorite book bloggers. Do check out Emer’s book blog.

This meme is quite easy to follow – just randomly pick a book from your to-be-read list and give the reasons why you want to read it. It is that simple.

This week’s book:

A Heart So White by Javier Marias

529075Blurb from Goodreads

Javier Marías’s A Heart So White chronicles with unnerving insistence the relentless power of the past. Juan knows little of the interior life of his father Ranz; but when Juan marries, he begins to consider the past anew, and begins to ponder what he doesn’t really want to know. Secrecy—its possible convenience, its price, and even its civility—hovers throughout the novel. A Heart So White becomes a sort of anti-detective story of human nature. Intrigue; the sins of the father; the fraudulent and the genuine; marriage and strange repetitions of violence: Marías elegantly sends shafts of inquisitory light into the shadows and on to the costs of ambivalence. (“My hands are of your colour; but I shame/To wear a heart so white”—Shakespeare’s Macbeth.)

Why I Want to Read It

I’ll be honest. Javier Marías is an author I’ve previously never heard of before. To be even more honest, today is the first time that I am researching more about him and his works. He is a Spanish author who is most renowned for his novel, A Heart So White. A fellow lover of the printed work recommended him and this work. Moreover, he mentioned that Marías is a strong contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Trusting this fellow book reader (whose diverse reading background is also a source of comfort), I added A Heart So White in my to-be-read list without further ado. Moreover, according to other readers, it is a great place to start with Marías’ work. I have just noted right now that three of Marias’ works are included in the 1,001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, including the aforementioned A Heart So White. I am, thus, looking forward to reading this work because I will hitting three targets with one stone. Too bad I don’t have a copy of the book (yet).

How about you fellow reader, what books are on your TBR pile? I hope you can share it with me in the comment box and the reason why you want to indulge in it.

Happy reading week everyone!
