Questions Set by Emer

1. Who is your favourite side / supporting character in a novel?

Let me think this through… As I am a plot-centric reader, I most often forget the characters in a book, maybe their name but not their personalities. It doesn’t help that I’ve read quite a lot of books as well! Haha. My initial choices were Hermoine and Ron of the Harry Potter series but I guess they’re part of the main cast so I’m going with the witty and ever-glamorous Astrid Teo of the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. I’ve only finished the first book but she’s just one memorable character.

2. What book do you think had the best world building?

The_Hunger_Games

Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games was my first immersion into the works of dystopian literature. I was immediately in awe of how Collins intricately drew a picture of Panem and its thirteen districts on my mind. Nearly a decade has past and The Hunger Games remain vivid on my mind. I’d have gone with Harry Potter and Hogwarts but that is one predictable choice. LOL. I still love Hogwarts but most of my vision of the magical school was derived from the movie so The Hunger Games it is.

3. You need to escape your house (for some reason) and can only bring five books with you. What books would you take?

Now this is one mean question! Haha. I love a lot of books from my collection but if I am faced with this hard choice then I’ll probably take the five thickest ones – 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, Parallel Stories by Peter Nadas, A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, and Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. But I’ll still try to save as many books as I can. Haha!

4. Which fictional character do you most strongly identify with or feel that is most like you personality-wise?

I’ve told this time and again but I do feel some affinity with Wuthering Height’s Heathcliff. I know how much he’s despised in the world of literature so please don’t crucify me for my eccentric choice. Haha!

5. What animal would you want as your superhero side-kick?

I’ll have a cat – they’re stoic and very independent. Dogs are way too clingy.

6. Which genre of books is the most unfairly under-rated in your opinion?

In my opinion, historical fiction is a little underrated. Most readers, from what I observed, prefer young adult fiction or fantasy or surrealism. I guess the aversion towards historical fiction is that most of these books tackle subjects that can be watched in documentaries or can be read in history books. I am not quite sure.

7. What is your favourite flavour of ice cream?

I’ve always been a sucker for the vanilla flavor. I like strawberry and cheese flavors too!

8. Would you rather read a great plot with average characters or a boring plot with amazing characters?

As I’ve mentioned in the first question, I’ve always been a plot-centric type of reader. A great plot can make up for a dull set of characters.

9. Do you annotate your books?

In one of my book tags, I mentioned keeping my books free from any marks. I am averse to the idea of writing on my books because I want them to be as immaculate as possible. I do keep a separate notebook, however, for jotting down some details that I want to research more on.

10. If you could switch places with any character (book, TV show, or film) for a day, who would you switch with and what would you do?

Ford Prefect from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series. I’ll spend the day jumping from one planet to another. It sounds like an interesting adventure!
