Meg’s Questions

What is an example of a book you love that you thought you would hate?

There really is not a book that I can say I hated before reading. I do dislike Fifty Shades of Grey but I have not read it yet. However, there are books that I have reservations before reading them. This is something that I have mentioned more than a few times already. I first bought Carlos Ruiz Zafon way back in 2017. However, I have been apprehensive about the book. I wasn’t really so sure that it would be a book for me. Back then, I was just starting to develop my appetite for various literary genres. It took some recommendations from fellow book bloggers to finally convince me to read the book. Lo and behold! My reticence was all for naught for novel reeled me in from the onset.

Another book that I had reservations with was Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove. It was a book that was ubiquitous; the hype made me apprehensive about the book. However, when I saw a KPop idol (NCT 127’s Johnny) show his copy of the book, I decided to give it a try. Just like Shadow of the Wind, A Man Called Ove simply blew me away.

Were you ever close-minded to a genre of books?

Of course. This is something that I guess, comes with the territory. For me, the genre that I am not really fond of is young adult fiction. I do read some every now and then but not that many really impress me. As a genre, young adult fiction is character-driven. Most of the time, the characters fail to deliver as they tend to either be angsty, bitter, or just whiney.

What do you look for the most in a tragedy?

Tragedies make me reflect most of the time. They also tend to arouse the most and the deepest emotions in me. However, what I look forward to in a tragedy is the character’s development throughout these tragic phases.

Trilogies or Quartets?

I really don’t mind either as long as the last book in the series gives a proper conclusion to the series. However, I do feel that four is the perfect number for a series – it is neither too short nor too long.

Retellings- Yes or No?

I don’t mind the retelling of classic stories for as long as writers give better and deeper insights. A retelling I enjoyed was Madeline Miller’s Circe where Miller fashioned a character starkly different from the villain that Circe has been portrayed in Greek mythology.

Is there a movie you believe is better then the book?

Maybe Lord of the Rings? Haha. I find the books a little challenging to read. Although honestly, I only watched the last movie in the trilogy, back when I was still in high school. In contrast, I read the trilogy about six years ago.

If you could write a book with different literary characters, which characters would you pick?

This one got me really thinking. Hmmm. Maybe Scarlett O’Hara from Gone with the Wind and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights. Both are strong-willed characters but I am not sure what to make of them yet. LOL.

Fashion a love triangle with characters you love

I am not really a fan of love triangles but for this question, I pick Jay Gatsby, Scarlett O’Hara and Heathcliff. These are just random choices.

Do you still read Middle Grade?

Definitely. (Children’s and Middle Grade) Books, after all, apply to all ages. There is a deeper reason as well why I still read these books. This is because I started reading later than most. I was already a senior in high school when I took to reading. Because of this, I have missed many wonderful reads. I am fervently trying to cover as much ground as I can.

What genre would you never read?

Hardcore Horror. My copy of It is still lying unread.
