Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme that was started by @Lauren’s Page Turners. This meme is quite easy to follow – just randomly pick a book from your to-be-read list and give the reasons why you want to read it. It is that simple.
This week’s book:
The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles
Blurb from Goodreads
The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America
In June 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the work farm where he has just served a year for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother and head west where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden’s car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future.
Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’s third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes.
Why I Want To Read It
Happy first day of the week! Monday was never my favorite day of the week and the events of the past few weeks pushed it back further as my least favorite day of the week. On another thought, Monday means new beginnings, new opportunities, new chances. Maybe I have to change my mindset? Anyway, a new week means we’re closer to a new year; 2022 is just a couple of days away. I want to do away with 2021 as quick as possible. Maybe better news will greet us in the new year. But before we end the new year, I still hope that your prayers get answered, that you receive the fruits of everything you worked hard for in the past year. I also hope that you are doing well, both physically and mentally, despite these trying and uncertain times. If there is one wish that I hope would be granted it would be for this pandemic to end. Although I am anxious about what 2022 has in store, I am still brimming with enthusiasm that we will all receive great news.
Not only are Mondays for new opportunities, but it is also for Goodreads Monday updates. These past few weeks, I have been featuring books I recently added to my (perpetually) growing reading list. This is, I guess, how the rest of November is going to be. For this Goodreads Monday update, I am featuring Amor Towles’ latest novel, The Lincoln Highway. The American writer rose to prominence with his debut novel, Rules of Civility.
Interestingly, my first encounter with Amor Towles was through his second novel, A Gentleman in Moscow. I loved the book and Towles’ prose, especially with how he captured the spirit of the period and the world inside the world of Hotel Metropol. He has an astute sense of observation that made the story of Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov flourish. I read it earlier this year and I was really impressed although I did feel that the earlier parts dragged. With his impressionable prose, it was hard to imagine that he had a different profession he worked on for over a decade before switching to full-time writing.
It was this amazing literary journey with A Gentleman in Moscow that made me add Towles’ works to my reading list, including his latest novel, The Lincoln Highway. It was just published in the second half of 2021. It seems that Towles is going to go from strength to strength as it is another work of historical fiction. This means it is right up just my alley. I can’t wait to read the book. How about you fellow reader? What memoirs have captured your interest? Perhaps you could share it in the comment box. Your insights would also be appreciated.
