This week’s topic: Top 5 Popular Books I Haven’t Read Yet

And just like that, seven days have passed by! We’re still stuck in our homes and so far, it seems like it has been effective as the number of cases have slowly dwindled down. It is either the lockdown is effective or because no mass testing has been conducted yet. I am fervently hoping that it is the former though. I pray that, across the globe, the number of positive cases slowly go down.

Before I get beyond myself, let us return to the aim of this Top 5 Tuesday update where I have to enumerate Top 5 popular books that I am yet to read. The thing is popularity is kind of relative and is affected by many factors. For instance, a certain book can be popular to a certain age group but not to a different age group. Nonetheless, I’ll try my best to come up with my Top 5 list. Here goes!

Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Berta Albertalli

Kicking off this list with a very popular young adult fiction, Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Berta Albertalli. It is no surprise that a large portion of the reading public are young adults, resulting to the elevation of the young adult fiction as one of the most popular genres today. Despite this, I am still averse to this genre but I do my own fair share of reading. I hope that this one will live up to the hype.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Kathryn Stockett’s debut novel, The Help, was an instant hit when it was published in 2009, spending over 100 weeks at the New York Times bestseller list. Its popularity further skyrocketed when it was adapted into a movie of the same title. Despite its popularity, I never got around to reading it. It’s been three years since I bought a copy of the book but it is still left to gather more dust in my bookshelf. I hope I get to read it this year.

I just realized how popular it really is. It was rated by over two million readers in Goodreads and despite that, the average reading is about 4.5. Wow!

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

Unless the first two authors in this book, I’ve already had my first taste of Morgenstern’s prose (The Night Circus). Contrary to expectations, I found the plot underdeveloped and a little on the whimsical side. It’s safe to say I wasn’t a fan and wasn’t really intrigued when I learned that she was publishing a new work last year. But after reading numerous glowing reviews of the book, I told myself to give her another chance. I did love Han Kang’s Human Acts even though I wasn’t really too keen on The Vegetarian.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

I guess I am one of the anomalies in the world for I have yet to read one of Charles Dickens’ most popular works, A Christmas Carol. Whenever Christmas season arrives, I am reminded that I have yet to read this work. Unfortunately, years have already passed and I have yet to buy myself a copy of the book. Ironically (or unironically), it is part of my yearly Christmas wish list. Will anybody just gift me the book? Haha.

Fifty Shades Trilogy by E.L. James

The book’s title is enough to remind everyone how much hype the entire series received when it was published about a decade ago. The dashing debonair, Christian Grey and the innocent and pure Anastasia Steele, are easily two of the most recognizable literary characters, perhaps mostly not for good reasons. The world has been intrigued by this erotica but, unlike most books in this post, I have no intentions of ever reading this trilogy. Or maybe someday, I’ll give it a go, when I want to understand and research more on really bad writing.
