This week’s topic: Top 5 Series I Want to Start
April is about to end just like that. Four months out of twelve done with a month and a half spent locked up in the confines of my home. Who can really believe that it’s just been four months; it feels like a year has already passed with all the catastrophes, tragedies, and the pandemic that immortalized 2020. Oh yeah, we have eight more months to go before the year truly ends. We just have to stay optimistic.
Anyway, I have to stop myself now before I’ll keep on jabbering with a litany of unrelated subjects. For this Top 5 Tuesday post, I am enumerating the top five series I want to start. Hmmm. I am not really that much of a series person because I like my stories to be standalones. Nonetheless, I have had my fair share of series such as the Harry Potter Series, Percy Jackson Series, and A Series of Unfortunate Events. For the sake of this post, I’ll come up with my own. Here goes! Happy reading!
A Dance to the Music of Time by Anthony Powell
With 12-books on this series (or not really a series based from what I understand of the concept of the book and the writing), A Dance to the Music of Time is a title that has long enchanted me. I barely have an iota on what the books are about but after coming across it in several must-read lists, I knew that it is a book I must read. But “a” book it is not, the joke is on me. Haha! But I certainly can make my way through 12 books.
In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust
Yet another lengthy series, I came across Marcel Proust’s In Search of Lost Time in the same way I came across A Dance to the Music of Time – through must-read lists. Considered by many as a classical and seminal work, this series is one that I have been looking forward to for years and unlike most series in this list, the only one that I have a copy of the books but for one. But I am still daunted for it gives that kind of intimidating vibe. Maybe I can immerse in this series next year. Maybe. Maybe.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeliene L’Engle
Wow! I didn’t realize that “Time” plays a key role in title of the first three series in this post. It was without any design or intention but any way, I came across Madeliene L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time while, *surprise*, going through must-read lists. The title and the curious cover was enough to beguile and enchant me. Unfortunately, I don’t have a copy of any of the books in this series. I am fervently searching for them though.
The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson
Ever since reading Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games Trilogy, I have become a fan of dystopian works (I always contend they’re not young adult fiction, haha). Although I was apprehensive at first, my countless encounters with Stieg Larsson’s The Millennium Trilogy in bookstores finally convinced me to include the series in my growing TBR list. Curiously, the trilogy’s title is also tied up with time (millennium). Again, I didn’t plan any of this. Haha.
Cromwell Trilogy by Hilary Mantel
And the last series in this post – Hilary Mantel’s Cromwell Trilogy! It is not yet officially a trilogy yet as the third and concluding book is set to be released this year. I’m adding the series on the list because it piqued my curiosity. I don’t know why but I guess it naturally worked its way up on my TBR list. An added bonus is that it is part of the canon of historical fiction, a genre that I have slowly learned to love over the years.
Added bonus
Both George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and James Dashner’s The Maze Runner are very popular television and movie series. But one thing is making me ambivalent about taking them on – their popularity. Let the future decide.
Powell and Proust are definitely a challenge. Not one I have yet completed although like you they are on my to-do list. The Millennium trilogy is a page turning pushover compared with these, with a great female lead in Lisbeth Salander. I’ve also read all Game of Thrones books although had to skip bits and couldn’t watch it on TV – too violent. Good luck.

Thank you for your remarks, duly noted. Indeed, Proust and Powell are going to be mountains to climb. Then again, I love a challenge every now and then.

I’ve read A Wrinkle in Time, but I never read any of the rest of the books in that series. I have The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sitting on my bookshelf, but haven’t picked it up yet. Hope you get to and enjoy each of these!
