Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme that was started by @Lauren’s Page Turners. This meme is quite easy to follow – just randomly pick a book from your to-be-read list and give the reasons why you want to read it. It is that simple.

This week’s book:

Redhead by the Side of the Road by Anne Tyler

Blurb from Goodreads

From the beloved and best-selling Anne Tyler, a sparkling new novel about misperception, second chances, and the sometimes elusive power of human connection.

Micah Mortimer is a creature of habit. A self-employed tech expert, superintendent of his Baltimore apartment building, cautious to a fault behind the steering wheel, he seems content leading a steady, circumscribed life. But one day his routines are blown apart when his woman friend (he refuses to call anyone in her late thirties a “girlfriend”) tells him she’s facing eviction, and a teenager shows up at Micah’s door claiming to be his son. These surprises, and the ways they throw Micah’s meticulously organized life off-kilter, risk changing him forever. An intimate look into the heart and mind of a man who finds those around him just out of reach, and a funny, joyful, deeply compassionate story about seeing the world through new eyes, Redhead by the Side of the Road is a triumph, filled with Anne Tyler’s signature wit and gimlet-eyed observation.

Why I Want To Read It

Ahhhh. It has been some time since I last read a work by Anne Tyler. In fact, it has nearly been a decade since my last Tyler! Her heartwarming tales that intersect human connection has left deep impression on me. I loved Breathing Lessons and The Accidental Tourist because of how they explore human sensibilities. The former, I have learned, also won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize whilst the latter has been shortlisted for the same award.

And it was just timely that I came across the 2020 Man Booker Prize Long List as I noted one familiar name – Anne Tyler! Yes, she is again up for another literary award, a testament to her literary prowess. I was not even aware that she released a new work, Redhead by the Side of the Road. Or maybe I skipped it when I was rounding up books for my 2020 Top 10 Books I Look Forward To list. Nevertheless, I am due for another Tyler; just like I had Bleak House last month after nearly a decade since my last Dickens.

I know that Redhead by the Side of the Road is going to be another thought-provoking read (or at least I hope so). Actually, I have started ticking off books from the Man Booker long list; my current read is Colum McCann’s Apeirogon. Speaking of the Man Booker Prize, they will be announcing the short list tomorrow. Just like in 2019, I am looking forward to the short list and hopefully I get to read all the books in both the long and short lists. I managed to read all the shortlisted books in the 2019 edition albeit I completed them just early this year.

Thus ends my Goodreads Monday post. How about you fellow reader, what book do you want to read? I hope you can share it in the comment box. For now, happy reading! Have a great week ahead!
