It’s the first Wednesday of the 10th month of the year! 2021 is just over the horizon. Wow, time really does fly fast. Since it is a Wednesday, it is also time for a WWW Wednesday update! WWW Wednesday is a bookish meme originally hosted by SAM@TAKING ON A WORLD OF WORDS. The mechanics for WWW Wednesday is quite simple, you just have to answer three questions:
- What are you currently reading?
- What have you finished reading?
- What will you read next?
What are you currently reading?
After Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Gods of Jade and Shadow and Mexican Gothic, I am currently reading my third Mexican novel in the span of two weeks. What a rare feat. Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolates initially didn’t interest me because I thought it was a short story collection rather than a novel. When I learned about my mistake, my curiosity was piqued. Apart from that, the cover is also very interesting. Beyond the incorporation of recipes and the smell of food, the story sounds simple enough. But I hope not because this is one book I am really looking forward to.
What have you finished reading?
Because of my playful imagination, I tend to veer away from horror fiction. I made an exception for Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic although I didn’t realize at first that it belongs to that genre. Nevertheless, I liked this book better than Gods of Jade and Shadow. With her evocative writing, Moreno-Garcia created an atmospheric environment, especially in the way she drew High Place, the Doyle family’s estate. It was reminiscent of Rebecca’s Manderley and even Wuthering Heights.
After a month of reading books published in the past two years, I opened my October reading journey with a literary classic, Ford Maddox Ford’s The Good Soldier. It was one of my random purchases during the 2019 edition of the Big Bad Wolf Sale; I didn’t realize then that the book was listed as part of the 1,001 Books You Must Read Before You Die. My impression. Well, it is a very challenging read. It is meant to be consumed in bits and pieces. It was a thought-provoking piece nevertheless.
What will you read next?
I guess I will be focusing on books listed in the 1,001 Books You Must Read Before You Die this month. After The Good Soldier, and Like Water for Chocolate, I am planning to next read Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. Then I might read D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover or Sons and Lovers next.
And thus concludes another WWW Wednesday update! I hope everyone is having a great midweek! Do keep safe and as always, enjoy reading!
